Fire Prevention Week 2014Published: Tuesday, September 23, 2014 By: Jackie O'Malley, Director of Business Development
Our Clothing & Textile Restoration Department helps families after they experience a fire, water or mold issue in their home. We work with their insurance company to restore clothing, bedding, window treatments, accessories and other textile items back to normal.
Each year, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) holds Fire Prevention Week, with a different theme each year. This year's theme is: Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!
Here are some stats and tips to make your home safer:
- About 60% of fire deaths from 2007-2011 resulted in homes with no working smoke alarms
- When smoke alarms fail, it is most likely because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead
- Cooking is the leading cause of house fires. However more than 50% of Americans admitted to silencing a false alarm by removing from wall or taking out batteries
- Photoelectric-type alarms are activated by a larger, smoldering fire, not from something like burnt toast, and are perfect to use in kitchens
